EHS Assistant Manager (Operations)

General Summary:

Design, Develop, Delegate and Deploy safety programs and activities of the company to ensure that an effective loss control and accident prevention program is maintained and that appropriate measures are taken to comply with corporate, OSHA, and related safety policies and directives.

Essential Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Coordinate periodic inspections of plant machinery, equipment, and working conditions to ensure conformance to appropriate safety and health standards; regulations in alignment with KIA Way. 
  • Examine plant equipment slated for purchase and proposed facility modifications and additions for safety requirements.  
  • Recommends Design In modifications or adjustments to correct any deficiencies prior to purchase or use.
  • Determine and specify appropriate safety equipment and safe work practices to be employed on specific jobs based on OSHA and corporate standards and implements accordingly through plant management and the KIA Way.
  • Leads Management of Change (MOC) process for all new equipment installations and existing equipment modifications from initial concept through buy-off and release for production.
  • Directs job analysis and quantified risk assessment of all jobs, in support of medical work comp case management and placement of restricted team members.
  • Lead ergonomics program and coordinate efforts with medical team, and athletic trainer to assess risk factors in each job: develop and direct job rotation schemes to minimize ergonomic risk factors, and conduct early symptoms intervention to minimize ergonomic injuries.
  • Administers implementation of the Kia Georgia construction safety program for facility modification or expansion projects and processes through coordination with Kia Georgia team members and their suppliers and contractors.
  • Respond and direct emergency operations on a 24 hour on-call basis. Perform, with all required personal protective equipment, in various roles on emergency response teams including, first responder, technician, safety officer, and incident commander.
  • Initiate and ensure Root Cause investigation of accidents and unsafe working conditions. Communicate findings through Safety Alerts & reports. Compile statistical data and providing remedial actions to achieve effective accident and loss prevention.
  • Chair regular departmental safety meetings & Shop Safety Culture Meetings. Ensure that coordinated safety training and motivational campaigns are conducted in association with company policies and governmental regulations.
  • Keep abreast of OSHA and corporate safety regulations and standards applicable to the plant.  Communicates with and/or trains team members to the extent appropriate to achieve understanding and compliance. Develops and prepares plant safety procedures and rules, ensure their communication to those affected and audits for compliance.
  • Provide assistance to GL’s, AM’s & Mgr.’s regarding the evaluation of safety problems and of team member’s safety recommendations and complaints.  Determines acceptable corrective measures accordingly.

Qualifications and Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Ergonomics, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or a related field along with eight (8) to ten (10) years of progressive experience in the safety field in a manufacturing environment preferably within the automotive industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a leadership or supervisory role. 
  • Safety committee activities, incident investigation/problem solving, tool & equipment specification, fire and security experience will also be considered.

Specialized Skills and Knowledge Required

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Proficiency in planning, organizing and directing day to day production safety operations ensuring shop compliance with OSHA regulations, standards & corporate directives.
  • Experience using Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access.
  • Experience with SAP system preferred.
  • Successful implementation of a safety or ergonomics program at any manufacturer or component manufacturer is preferred.  Other successful safety or ergonomics program experience will be considered. 

SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED:

  • OSHA competent person - general industry, NSC advanced safety certificate.
  • COHS Technologist Professional.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP).
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
  • Certified Ergonomics Technologist or Professional (CET / CEP).
  • Associate or Certified Safety Professional (ASP / CSP).
  • Occupational Safety and Health Technologist (OSHT).
  • Industrial Hygiene certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or the ability to become certified.
  • Emergency response and Incident Commander training.
